How to start playing Warhammer 40K?

Warhammer 40K is one of the most popular wargames. Its history began in 1987 and continues to this day. Currently, players can already enjoy the 10th edition. There are 24 factions available in the game, and each of them has many different units. Where to start your adventure? Which miniatures to buy at the beginning, and what is better to avoid? Let's find out.

What is Warhammer 40K and what does it involve?

Play Warhammer 40K It involves simulating army clashes using miniature figures. It combines elements known from RPGs and board games. Each player has their own army – 24 factions are available. They can be divided into:

  •  regular forces of the Empire,
  • Chapters of the Space Marines,
  • followers of Chaos,
  • Alien races.

Each unit has its own point value. Players agree on the applicable point limit and create army lists before the game. Games are most commonly played at 1000 or 2000 points. This allows for fielding anywhere from several to over a dozen units. Each of them can consist of 1 or even 20 models. Players can also field monsters, vehicles, and legendary heroes.

Which set should I start playing Warhammer 40K with?

The number of available options can make your head spin. The adventure with Warhammer 40K You can start in several ways.

  • Finding a local store and asking for an introduction.
  • Buying a starter kit.
  • Starting with a lighter Combat Patrol format.
  • Organizing the army list and buying all required units.

The first option is, of course, the simplest, but it can only be used by people who have such a store in their area. Starter sets usually contain two small armies and a set of necessary accessories. Thanks to them, you can have a soft entry into the gameplay and learn the rules, but the player will not have the option to choose an army.

An interesting option is the format Combat Patrol. Every army has such a ready-to-use set. The rules in this format are simplified and can be found on the internet. It's a great way to learn how to play. Combat Patrol miniatures usually have a value of 400-500 points, so it's enough to buy a few units or a second set to play at 1000 points.

Do you need to know the lore to play Warhammer 40K?

World Warhammer 40K this is not just a miniature wargame. Each faction has its history that evolves with subsequent editions of the game. Those interested can explore the extremely rich lore for practically every unit. You can find books, movies, and computer games set in the universe Warhammer 40K.

Knowledge of the background story is not required to play, however. The most important things are having the miniatures, the necessary accessories, and knowing the rules. You also cannot forget about gaming companions – by choosing a starter set, you can start playing with two people right away.
