Phlebology – what does this field of medicine deal with?

Low physical activity, smoking, heavy alcohol consumption, a standing or sitting lifestyle, or an unhealthy diet are factors that negatively affect the condition of our circulatory system. Most often, they lead to the development of varicose veins, circulatory problems, or blood clots.

What does a phlebologist do?

A doctor whose specialization is diagnosing the circulatory system is a phlebologist. An expert in the diagnosis of venous vessels. Phlebology includes the treatment of varicose veins, spider veins, and phlebitis, and importantly, the prevention of vascular diseases. When you notice the first changes that may lead to the formation of varicose veins or even venous insufficiency, such as a feeling of „heavy legs,” swollen calves, ankles, or feet, it is worth seeing a phlebologist, and a recommended specialist in this field is Doctor Juza, helping patients with various types of vein diseases for years. Along with the progression of circulatory failure, vessel thickening can appear on the legs, usually below the knees and around the ankles, along with swelling and irreversible changes in blood vessels. Over time, varicose veins can complicate smooth walking or cause anemia and the appearance of ulcers.

What does the diagnostics involve?

Usually, it is performed using a non-invasive and very quick ultrasound (Doppler) examination. This is an extremely accurate ultrasound test used to detect arterial and venous diseases. It enables diagnosis even in the early stages of the disease, allowing the patient to start treatment quickly. A phlebologist usually treats varicose veins in a non-invasive manner. Based on the diagnosis, they select the best treatment method, depending on the patient and the stage of the changes. Various procedures are used in this treatment, such as ultrasound, laser therapy, massage and lymphatic drainage, and echotherapy. Massage and lymphatic drainage are intended to improve blood and lymph circulation, while sclerotherapy and miniphlebectomy deal with the removal of dysfunctional blood vessels.
The previously mentioned sclerotherapy is responsible for inducing the adhesion and closure of blood vessels that are incapable of properly transporting our blood. The closure of vessels is performed by injecting an appropriate pharmaceutical in the form of a liquid or foam into the malfunctioning vessel. As a result, the varicose veins are absorbed. It is performed in series repeated at 2-week intervals. The phlebologist decides how many such treatments there should be. After the procedure, wearing compression stockings is usually recommended.

Do not ignore the symptoms of vein diseases

When the first signs of changes appear on your body, such as spider veins, varicose veins, swelling, or bruises, it is worth consulting a phlebologist. Genetic predispositions are an important aspect of prevention. If someone in your immediate family is prone to varicose veins, get examined; it is better to prevent than to cure. It is important that the shoes you wear are comfortable, your clothes non-restrictive, and your lifestyle healthy. With proper body supplementation, you can protect yourself against many dangerous conditions.
