How to choose the right conveyor belt?

Currently, there are many manufacturers on the market offering conveyor belts that differ in many respects. The choice is very wide, but also difficult, because in order to choose the right one, you need to take into account many important factors such as the elevator model, the type of material the belt will come into contact with, or the working conditions. Choosing the correct belt affects the time of trouble-free operation.

What should be considered when choosing tape?

There is a lot of data to consider when selecting a conveyor belt. Making a mistake can lead to its rapid destruction and even additional costs associated with repairing the entire conveyor. Although there are many offers on the market, one should not be discouraged by this, but rather slowly analyze all the data of the equipment and the goods, as well as pay attention to its quality. Thanks to a well-chosen belt, the transport of goods will be maximally efficient and optimal. In addition, it is worth remembering that the purchase of the belt itself does not guarantee its eternal use. Conveyor belts should be systematically inspected and, in the event of damage, their repair or splicing should be commissioned.

Durability

Durability is one of the most important factors to consider when choosing a belt. The more durable it is, the better; otherwise, its replacement or repair will be necessary after a very short time, and if it breaks, the entire production line may be halted. In addition, price, warranty, positive cooperation with the manufacturer, and the proximity of their headquarters are also important.

Cover thickness

It turns out that if the belt is very thick, it will not necessarily operate for a long time without any failure. The maximum difference between the carrying cover and the running cover should be at most 3:1. The abrasion resistance of the rubber is more important than its thickness; however, many suppliers recommend thicker covers than recommended, which negatively affects the proper operation of the equipment.

Splice tapes

The belts are produced in sections of specific dimensions, which are later joined into a continuous line whose length is tailored to the customer's preferences. The sections are joined together in various ways, which are characterized by a specific durability. The most durable method is vulcanization and gluing, as they guarantee the longest trouble-free operation time.

Structure

The belt has a running (bottom) layer, which typically has a fabric or waffle structure or is completely smooth. The carrying (top) layer, on the other hand, can have various structures. The choice for the running layer is usually related to noise emission, while the selection of the material for the carrying side affects the mechanical properties of the belt.

Material

The core, known as the carcass, is a belt component that influences its technical parameters. The choice of the proper carcass determines the suitability of the belt for a given application. Each type is characterized by different properties, including resistance to high and low temperatures and various substances, as well as abrasion rates.

Work system

The type of conveyor belt support system is an important selection factor. Flat systems are the most common, but slightly less popular trough systems also occur alongside them. Both require an individual approach, as does the way the belt operates. Using a belt that meets the requirements of each of these parameters will guarantee long and efficient operation of the conveyor.

Special conditions

This criterion requires knowledge of the characteristics of the product that will come into contact with the tape, as well as the features of the work environment. It should be considered whether a general-purpose tape will suffice, or if it will be exposed to high or low temperatures, chemicals, or abrasion. In such cases, it is necessary to choose one that can withstand the conditions prevailing in the given environment.

Food industry requirements

The food industry guarantees another wave of challenges in belt selection, as it requires a special approach to food products. Such a belt must meet very high criteria in terms of hygiene and sterility. They are made of white rubber, thanks to which any contamination is immediately visible on it. They must meet the requirements of being tasteless and odorless, withstand frequent washing with a high-pressure water jet, and have appropriate certificates allowing direct contact with food.
