In the 19th century, such great importance was once attached to flowers and their hidden meanings that a special dictionary was even created in which their symbolism was recorded.

Often the meaning of flowers changes with their color. To this day, knowledge about the symbolism of their colors has been preserved. Red flowers signify desire and passion. Moreover, they also symbolize love for parents, falling in love, strength, and courage. By contrast, purple flowers signify parting, mourning, and sorrow. The yellow color, on the other hand, is very deceitful—on the one hand, it is meant to signify friendship, and on the other, lies and jealousy. Other colors also have their meanings: pink—femininity and sympathy, white—respect and fidelity, blue—attachment and friendship.

Of course, the meaning of flowers also changes depending on their species. Nowadays, the symbolism of flowers is not taken to heart as much as it used to be, but it is still worth knowing about to avoid awkward situations and unnecessary faux pas.
