What is chalk paint?
This product is appreciated primarily by people who like to renovate furniture at home, on their own. It is ideally suited for renovating old surfaces, and the original effect it provides should satisfy the most sophisticated tastes. In addition to easy application chalk pastel their another advantage is high adhesion, as well as the possibility of obtaining the so-called shading and wiping effect, especially on wood. It naturally consists of water, chalk, and additives, which vary depending on the intended use of the paint. It can be applied to almost any surface, also without stripping previous coats of paint and using a primer, which undoubtedly speeds up the work. However, one should not omit the important step of washing and degreasing the painted surface before starting the renovation.
Types of chalk paint
There are several types of chalk paint, differing in properties and application. The main types are:
- Casein chalk paint – otherwise known as milk paint, based on casein, which is the protein found in milk. Its use will provide a decorative distressed effect.
- Mineral chalk paint – creating a durable coating and characterized by high permeability. Its base is silicates.
- chalk glue paint - chalk is combined in such a product with hide or bone glues. When choosing a glue-based chalk paint, it is worth paying attention, among other things, to the percentage of chalk in the product.
- Magnetic chalkboard paint – due to the iron content in the product, the surface painted with this paint will acquire magnetic properties. It will therefore be possible to attach metal elements to it. It is used to create a primer for acrylic emulsion.
- Resin chalk paint – resin-based. It can be either natural or synthetic resin. This type of paint is characterized by fast drying and excellent protection of the painted surface against dirt.
- Oil emulsion-based chalk paint – this type is based on linseed oil and water. It is highly weather-resistant, making it perfect for painting objects that are outdoors on a daily basis.
No matter what type of paint we choose, it is always a good idea to properly protect the painted surface by using the appropriate type of wax for this purpose.
